In 47 days I’m turning 40, a milestone that’s been stalking me for the better part of the past year – a shadowy presence in the dark corners of my mind and in moments when I’m alone and vulnerable.

I remember my parents turning 40, feted with black balloons and snarky cards about being over the hill. My father received a cane from his close circle of friends; my mother swore in slightly frantic tones that she still felt 29.

Forty has received a spiffy new makeover since then, but I still find myself approaching this thug of a birthday with slow steps, a white flag, and soothing words: “I come in peace.” Or at least I’m trying to.

Beth Moore's New Battleground

It was a treat to get to interview beloved Bible teacher Beth Moore several months ago for a magazine article I’d been assigned to write. Gaining a helpful mantra in the process was simply a bonus.
I’ve found myself repeating Beth's helpful words often in the months since our conversation. Because they’re that needed and helpful. And insecurity—Beth’s new battleground—is that sneaky and prevalent.
Check it out in this HomeLife cover story:

Breaking the Silence

This past December, my Advent season was peppered with thoughts of rape. I’d been assigned to write an article on the topic for Prism, the magazine of Evangelicals for Social Action. So in between shopping for last-minute gifts, eating too much food with my family, and attending church services, I occasionally interviewed rape survivors on the phone. Or holed up in my parents’ office to research and write about this difficult topic.
Though I was grateful for the assignment, it certainly brought a heaviness to this season when we celebrate the Light of the World. These interviews and web searches felt anachronistic in this season of hope and joy. Inconvenient even. But then I realized how altogether appropriate that feeling was.
