The Patron Saint of Single Women

 

As a former singles columinst who now works for a Jewish-ish organization, I found this take on singleness intriguing. Hope you do too. (And for my fellow Gentiles, haftorah refers to the section of the Hebrew Bible read aloud in the synagogue that day.)

An Unmarried Woman

I first learned about Devorah—the judge, prophetess, and heroine of this week’s haftorah—as a fourth-grader at an all-girls yeshiva in Brooklyn. Sharing a name with her, and learning of her successful military campaign against the Canaanites, made me tremendously proud. Even at 8 years old, I was familiar enough with the Bible to recognize that her story was unique: a woman in a leadership role with no male significant other, a woman who didn’t need a man to be complete.

Beth Moore's New Battleground

 
It was a treat to get to interview beloved Bible teacher Beth Moore several months ago for a magazine article I’d been assigned to write. Gaining a helpful mantra in the process was simply a bonus.
 
I’ve found myself repeating Beth's helpful words often in the months since our conversation. Because they’re that needed and helpful. And insecurity—Beth’s new battleground—is that sneaky and prevalent.
